Picking The Right Bike!

There is a misconception that picking the right bike is easy. They think that all they have to do is pick out which bicycle looks the prettiest to them and allows them to sit comfortably. Wrong, there is more to it these days than simply looks and comfort. Cycling is increasing in popularity in many areas of life, such as sports, hobbies, transport etc. we now have many different bikes to choose from. Some people are choosing to cycle as a means of transportation on a regular basis. Some people have decided to take up cycling as a hobby. The following will explain how you choose the best bike for whatever it is you aim to use it for.

It is important to know how your bike comes to a stop. You have to think about what you are most comfortable with along the lines of stopping your bicycle. There are some bicycles that have breaks that are designed to grab onto the wheels and squeeze then in order to stop the motion, and this is great for a hobby rider. If you are going to be using your bicycle more often or in heavy terrain, you will want brakes that are a little more hard core and complicated. These brakes are called 'disc brakes' and are located within the wheel, they are far more reliable than this normal brakes and are less likely to fail over time. You will also need to consider which handlebars you want on your bike. You may think all handlebars are the same, but they're not. Common handlebars which simply extend straight out are good for regular cycling, they offer good maneuverability especially when used on hard terrain. They are good for distributing your weight as you ride over a bigger area. If you are using your bike for racing, then you want to pick some handlebars that are more slim and allow you to lean forward on your bike so you can go faster. For people who rarely use their bike they will want handlebars which allow the bike to be stored away efficiently, but which also offer some level of comfort when cycling.

You also need to acquire some safety gear. There have been many advancements on bicycle helmets since they first were introduced. Not only are they made to better protect you, but they are also made to appeal a bit more aesthetically. You should never go for a ride without putting on your helmet first. You don't even realize how important this thing can be in saving your life.

It wouldn't hurt to also grab some elbow and knee guards, as well as ankle and wrist guards, just in case you decide to take your bike off the road. Another piece of safety equipment that you should think about getting are pants clips, especially if you are going to be using your bike as a primary mode of transportation. Pants clips are designed to hold your pants in place so they don't get caught up in the chain or the gears of the bike.

When looking for a bike your main goal is to find one that suits you physically. That is the primary goal of anyone who chooses cycling as their primary form of transportation. You need to feel safe but also comfortable on your bike, otherwise you won't enjoy riding it!
